Mite of the Month for September, 2004


N6033V is a 1952 M-18LA, serial number 130, owned by Chuck Moore of Lufkin, TX.

The rebuild of this airplane by Boyd Maddox of Houston, TX was featured in the May 2002 issue of Custom Planes.

Over a three year period, the wing was rebuilt using a factory-new possum belly & parts after a gear up landing. The wing, control services and tail were re-covered with Ceconite and nitrate & butyrate dope. It is painted Randolf Tennessee Red.

The restoration was completed in March 2003.

Here are the log entries which document the work:

"Removed cowl, serviced and gapped spark plugs. Cleaned gascolator, replaced Bracket air filter. Changed Oil, replaced w/4 qts AeroShell 100W. Compression: 1-75, 2-76, 3-74, 4-78. All AD’s complied with this date. AD list in back of Airframe Log Book. All work done in reference to Mooney Mite & Lycoming service instructions and check list. Washed and ran engine. I CERTIFY THAT THIS ENGINE HAS BEEN INSPECTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH AN ANNUAL AND WAS DETERMINED TO BE IN AIRWORTHY CONDITION. 2200.45 Total Time 559.75 Tach 585.45 SMOH.

"Removed wing, tail and all control surfaces. Removed all fabric. Repaired bottom of wing using factory new Possum Belly per Mooney Mite repair instructions. Recovered wing, tail and all control surfaces using Randolph system, Ceconite 103 fabric, 2 coats non-tautening nitrate dope, 3 coats non-tautening butyrate dope, 3 coats silver, 1 coat white spray butyrate and 2 coats high solids Tennessee Red top coat. Assembled aircraft, lubricated all control rod ends & hinges. Replaced Brackett air filter. Adjusted gear down over-center torque values. Complied with AD’s 79-11-05R1 & 79-18-07 Wood deterioration,. All work done in reference to Mooney Mite Service instructions, Randolph Procedures Manual and 43.13-B1 and check list. AD list in back of this log book. Form 337 filed.
