agriculture at its best

Prosser is known for its superb agriculture. Farmers, orchardists, processors and winemakers take great pride in the products they craft from the abundant, farm-fresh products.

a winemaker's paradise

Prosser's rolling hills and lush countryside lie just north of the 46th parallel in the same latitude as the great French wine-producing areas. The long, warm summer days, cool nights and rich soil enable local farmers to grow some of the finest wine grapes in the world. Shortly after prohibition, scientists at Washington State University's Irrigated Agricultural Research and Extension Center began experimenting with grape growing. This facility, located on 200 acres north of Prosser, is the largest irrigated research center of its kind in the world. Today, 98 percent of Washington's wine grapes are grown near Prosser. The ability to grow premium wine grapes helped establish Prosser as the "birthplace of Washington's modern-day wine industry." Eight wineries, including the award-winning Hogue Cellars, are located in this area. Quaint wineries set among vineyards will welcome you in to sample world-class wines and invite you to enjoy the scenery and hospitality of the countryside. Each winery is as unique as the wine it produces. While touring wine country, you'll also want to stop at the shops of local specialty food producers, fresh farm markets and microbreweries.

get away from the mall

Prosser's downtown offers many unique shopping experiences including: clothing, jewelry, book, and antique stores. Stroll through town with old-fashioned light poles overhead and cobbled sidewalks underfoot then stop for a treat at the local drug store, where locals gather for lunch. Other attractions within a five minute walk include historic homes, Benton County Courthouse, Benton County Historical Museum and the Princess Theatre, complete with neon, sign and currently under reconstruction.

make your plans early

Plan ahead a bit and you can work a great community festival or special event into your itinerary. You can be one of 3,800 people who make the Prosser Wine and Food Fair an annual event during the second Saturday in August each year. Starting mid-afternoon, until well after sunset, you can sample products from wineries, microbreweries and local food purveyors. Prosser is also known for its annual Great Prosser Balloon Rally where as many as 35 balloonists lift-off over the Yakima River. The evening's Night Glow event lights up the area and provides an awesome sight for visitors of all ages.
